Hank & Dee

Hank & Dee is a children’s book I wrote and illustrated inspired by the Ringling Brothers Circus shutting down their operations due to continuous public outcry regarding the mistreatment of their circus elephants.

Because children are a large portion of the target audience of animals being used for entertainment, I thought it could be impactful to create a children’s story showcasing a different side of the industry from the perspective of the circus elephants.

Writing a story for children about animal neglect was challenging since they’re often sensitive to animal suffering. It was important to me that I focus the story on Hank & Dee’s longing to live a free life and not necessarily the abuse a circus animal would typically endure.

Challenge

Hank & Dee’s emotions were captivated through the use of colour. During moments of despair, the pages are filled with dark and gloomy textures while moments of hope and happiness display vibrant and lively colours.

Solution

Hank & Dee received 1st place in Editorial and Book Design in Applied Arts magazine. However, the greatest award has been seeing all of the kids in my life enjoy this book and having it be part of their daily bedtime routines.
